I bargained with life for a penny.......

This is a great poem I came across a long time ago and found it again this week. Given that we're still at the early stages of a New Year it's message(s) remain relevant. This is how it runs:

"I bargained with Life for a penny
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
For Life is a just employer
He gives you what you ask,
But once you set the wages
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial's hire
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life
Life would have paid"
-Jessie B. Rittenhouse
We should reflect on the depth and simplicity of what's on offer here. The messages as I see them are 3 fold.
  1. The person who decides the level of the bar at all times is us
  2. If we want to succeed and exceed we have to pay the price of success
  3. Having Goals, a Plan and a means of sticking to it inevitably leads to success

Why do so few people realise their potential then?....I believe it is because most of us are not even awake, fewer are aware of the reality and even less of us care enough about our lives to take control of them and live their own dream. When we live in fear we play small and that's how things turn out.......Paul Arden, the late great Advertising guru (the guy who famously put the blink into the the BA ads using moving people some years ago) once famously said in one of his books:

"Nearly all rich and powerful people are not notably talented, educated, charming or good looking....They become rich and powerful by wanting to become rich and powerful"

Are you 'planning' on getting more or less than YOU 'bargained for' in 2010!

Your comments as alwaysa are very welcome

Great Service Comes From The Heart

I came across a gem that shows just how much difference anyone can make. The essence is this is a young guy of 19 with a disability whose job is packing groceries in a grocery store. He was inspired to make the experience of the people who came into his store personal and memorable. To see what he did just follow this link, it's very simple and very special; http://www.stservicemovie.com/ ...Why? Because it comes from the HEART?

A couple of things occurred to me while watching this:

  1. Anyone can make a difference, you just need to care enough.
  2. The more personal it is the more people notice and the greater the difference.
  3. Making people feel good about themselves while dealing with you is really important.

All selling and service is influenced by emotion no matter how much we apply mental processes to it. What I've grown to appreciate in my work as a Coach is that getting the balance right between thinking and feeling is really important. Can you imagine the word of mouth conversations these people have with friends? It's hardly about the cost of groceries, it's actually about a brilliant 'Customer Experience'. How often we spend so much time artificially pumping this when in fact it's free to each of us all the time. The milk of human kindness is really a CHOICE.........

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Astonishing Power of 'Self-Discipline'

Here's a link to an excerpt from a short book on Self Discipline by one of the 'Goals Gurus' -Brian Tracy. I really rate how he thinks and what he's achieved. http://www.simpletruths.com/flash_files/ibTPOD/ibTPOD.html

Several things struck me about what I read;
  1. Discipline is the bridge between Goals and Accomplishment
  2. Only 3% of the world have WRITTEN goals....Everyone else works for them!
  3. Self Discipline is the key to personal greatness. It is the magic quality that opens all doors and makes everything possible

I recall one of GB Shaw's great quotes 'There is nothing more abundant in this world than people with ability who elect not to use it'

As we begin another year reflect on what YOU want to achieve in 2010.

This is indeed 'a little hinge that swings a very big door'

Teamwork...The Art of Possibility....

Sometimes we encounter something that is short, captivating and simply beautiful. Have a look at what a group of 6 young people who are still at school manage to achieve in less than 3.5 mins.

With teamwork like this anything is possible and it uplifted me by offering hope in what's possible. Have a great 2010!

Hope you like it as much as I did; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV1NkFItIco
